Broad Oak – Moving Cake

Some years ago. Broad Oak aka Nigel Braddock, recorded and produced an album in Berlin for John White. In between sessions for his dream folk album, John laid down some vocal parts and raps (as Jumps) for a couple of tracks that Nigel was working on, one of which became Moving Cake. Says Braddock, “Jumps specialises in twee rap which I suspect may be a genre he invented. He raps about silly things and just makes up words as he goes.”

Originally from New Zealand but now living in Berlin, Broad Oak studied classical piano from an early age and completed a music degree before deciding the life of a classical musician was not for him.

In the year 2000, after some years wandering the planet, he set up a little label called Monkey Records in Auckland to release an album by his band Dystopia which was a collaboration with a poet and a sitar player. Since then he has recorded and produced multiple albums for the label and his first tracks under the Broad Oak moniker were collaborations with musician from those sessions.

These days, he is more focused on his own work which ranges in style from ambient to minimalist electronica to dream pop. His debut EP, In Love With These Hills, was released in November, 2022 and his second EP, The Universe Is a Strange Place came out in June 2023. His debut album will finally be released early 2024.
