The Mung Beings are Saadiah Fowlkes (vocals), Nigel Braddock (keys) and Allan Thomasson (bass and drums). Originally from the US, New Zealand and Australia respectively, they met in Berlin when they were all teaching English at a language school and started making music together. Their intriguing self-titled debut album is a fusion of conscious hip hop, electronica, ambient and jazz. Fowlke’s compelling lyrics capture the Zeitgiest of our times and tackle important issues such as climate change, AI and racism. The album also features Saadiah’s father, legendary jazz trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, who sadly passed away last year. This album is dedicated to him.
